When God Speaks
How does the Holy Spirit speak to you?
Have you ever felt and unexplainable prompting to go next door, into your workplace, or across the world to share the love of Christ, but ignore the urge because of doubt and fear?
Is your fear or pride keeping you from God’s grace and the story He wants to write in you?
Could God be speaking to you as he did to Elijah, not in a violent storm, earthquake, fire, or even in a dramatic dream, but in a whisper? 1Kings 19:11-13
As we travel around the world, we hear many stories of how God speaks. In Muslim culture, it is not unusual to listen to stories that Christ appeared in a dream, and they describe Him as the man in the white robe. In Hindu cultures, God also appears as a bright light that speaks in their dreams. In addition to appearing in dreams, the Holy Spirit often speaks through others in such a way that we know this could only be God.
We just heard an incredible story of God speaking to one of our courageous Teach To Transform trainers in Egypt. We were recently at the Global Mission Conference in Nairobi, Kenya and heard his testimony as he shared how Christ spoke to him in a dream. He was raised in a Muslim culture and knew very little of the Christian Bible. One evening while studying and memorizing the Quran, he went to his room to rest but was overtaken by severe pain throughout his entire body. Two nights in a row as he was memorizing the Quran, his body was incapacitated from pain that became unbearable, but on that second night, he had a vision that changed his life.
A bright light appeared in a cloud that broke through the darkness of his room. He lay there, stunned and speechless, and then from the cloud, a hand reached out to him. He then heard a loving voice say to him, this is Jesus Christ, come follow me, and I will take away your pain.
The next morning, he woke completely pain-free and knew he had just had a divine appointment with the one true God, Jesus Christ. He had sense of unexplainable peace, and he denounced his Muslim faith to his family and friends, who thought he had gone mad and threw him out.
The fact that he didn’t know any Christians didn’t stop his passion for telling everyone about Jesus, and he has become a courageous evangelist for Christ. He went so far as to leave his home and began traveling to surrounding countries where he would relentlessly share the love of Christ through the gospel. On one occasion, he was detained and beaten for two days because he would not denounce Christ. He said he never once considered turning from Christ because he said, “If I gave into the beatings, other Christians would face the same fate because they would believe that beatings were the way to get followers of Christ to deny their faith. He said he was ready to take the blows even to death. In other words,
To live is Christ and to die is gain. Philippians 1:20-21
Have you ever met someone with a love and passion for Christ that is so inspiring and courageous, it is beyond words? When we have opportunities to share our faith with friends, family, or coworkers, but sit quietly, fearful of cultural persecution have we missed God speaking to us?
Do we love Jesus with such passion and fire that nothing will keep us from sharing the gospel?
John 13:34: A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.
Many of us will never experience such an overwhelming personal encounter with God appearing or speaking to us in our dreams. However, is it possible that God speaks to us through the miracle of divine appointments? That random conversation or a chance meeting where the timing or circumstance is unexplainable and beyond a coincidence. Could this be
God speaking to us?
Are you the one to be fearless like this Egyptian man, bold in your witness and speak truth in love for the Kingdom of God? Remember you are one insane act of courage away from an amazing story God is ready to write.
I pray your answer is yes send me!
Then I heard the Lord saying, Whom shall I send? And who will go for us? And I said,
“Here am I. send me!” Isaiah 6:8
